Summer Course, May 14-29, 2012

Hi, everyone. Welcome to the Living in the Yucatan 2012 blog!

I'm guessing you've come across this blog because of the cryptic fliers floating around campus or because of emails crowding your inbox. Or perhaps you just stumbled across the blog by accident.

Whatever the case, this is the official blog for a summer course in the Yucatan, May 14-29, 2012, offered by Dr. Coats in the Communication Studies major at Millsaps College.

This two-week course will take us all over the Yucatan where we will encounter a variety of tourist places and practices -- from the beaches of Cancun to the World Heritage site of Chichen Itza. The objective of the course will be to experience different tourist places and tourist narratives and how they relate to media. Also, we will explore the ethical, economic and ecological implications of travel.

We'll have our own guide on this trip, Miguel Mendez, and we'll have a special guest, Tomas Gallareta Negron, Millsaps scholar of Maya Studies, on part of our journey as well.

So, if you're interested in tourism and how that intersects with culture and communication, this is the trip for you!

Please join us Tuesday, Oct. 11, at 7 p.m. and/or Wednesday, Oct. 12, at 4 p.m. at Reuben's (on Millsaps Campus) for an informational meeting.
